Dark, gloomy and ugly. These are the terms that come out of our mouth when we think of the bird named raven. Such a symbol of gloom and an unhappy fate is what the lore tells us about it. According to a poem by Edgar Allan Poe, it overcame a person until his own sanity is in question. Shakespeare on the other hand had it waiting on different places for people such as Macbeth.
Aren’t the views of people like us for this bird too negative and are already below the belt? We judged it with our own beliefs even without opening our genius-like minds on its true color. Are we still acting as if we are human beings who commit a lot of mistakes?
I ain’t mad and angry against the people who view this bird that way. What am I trying to do am to change the way the people look on the raven. I tell this because I want to restore the humanity from their blindness because they are blindfolded from the reality. I do this, because the negative things of a being may be or may have its own lighter side.
The raven is quite known as a symbol of too much negativity. Death is actually the first thing that comes when the name of this bird is mentioned to the minds of everyone, no matter they’re innocent or they have knowledge already. An omen of death is the first spark into the minds of the people when they see these birds flying over them. And so, we are also taken by the gigantic wave of the world’s belief and we also associate it by that.
How dare do the people say that a book is not judged by its cover, yet they judge a not so good looking animal, which is a being of God, like that? Don’t we realize that what we do is truly unfair, because we condemn an innocent being of God like that?
For me, it shouldn’t go that way, for only stupid, deceitful and greedy people are the once who ought to associate the raven with a gloomy and unhappy fate. What the elders said about the raven should now be treated by the elders themselves. What lore has written in the bloody pages of history should be erased by it and what the people said about it shall be eaten together with dust.
Haidas of North America believe that it is the animal which persuaded them to be free from the clamshell and join him in the world. On the part of Scandinavians, Huginn and Muninn, which are ravens, are the creatures to which Odin is thankful to, because they are the once who bring news to the king of kings of the Vikings. And most importantly, on the part of Morris Graves, it is a bird which is blind, but has moved on regardless its physical appearance. Now, may I ask the people pessimistic about the raven to speak up and prove their stand?
What I mean by what I said positive about the raven is that is a bird who is quite a hero. Think of a world without the ravens. Who are to eat the bodies of the dying animals that we cannot burry? I also mean to say that the ravens are on of the smartest birds ever. Have you ever seen a bird that reads numbers and usually gets food as a reward of its smartness? And by that, I truly mean that a raven is a bird remains strong enough among the rest even if it is left alone and is considered by many that way.
Now, why do I really emphasis this bird throughout the whole talk? Because it is a bird that really symbolizes me. It is a bird that has some characteristics that are parallel to me.
Like the raven, they think of me as a fool, a kill joy, a grade conscious and even a trouble maker. When I go to a certain place, most of the people will never learn to greet me and will surely ensure that there is a distance between them and me. Because of my past weirdness, which is obvious upon the way I put on my own clothes, I am not afraid to admit that I have also experienced to be an outcaste before. I show my smile with my teeth, not by my heart, because I am plague to them.
But actually, for me to prove to them that I am not the person that they used to think of before, I showed them that I have moved on from my past experiences with them. Forget whatever my past is and remember what I am today. A smart and talented, yet perfectionist, pretensive, antipathetic and hot-tempered person, which is me. That’s I and I made it to understand them and to survive what they utter against me due to their misunderstanding.
Truly like the raven, a person will never know the kindness deep in me unless they know me better by their concern and willingness to understand someone like me. I wish they were that way.
Therefore, a person like me can be as mystical as the raven.
